Ear, nose and throat problems are among the most common reasons travellers need a doctor in Japan. Cabin pressure, dry air, air conditioning and a long flight are all it takes. We are an otolaryngology (ENT) clinic in central Osaka, two minutes from JR Osaka Station, and no appointment is needed.
About English
Reception, paperwork and payment are handled in English. We have two doctors: one consults in English directly, and the other consults with the help of a translation device.
If you would prefer to see the English-speaking doctor, please call us before you come and we will let you know when they are available.
Also called aerotitis media. During descent, the air pressure in the cabin rises faster than your middle ear can equalise. If the Eustachian tube is blocked — often by a cold, sinus congestion or hay fever — the eardrum is pushed inward and can become inflamed.
| Blocked or full feeling | As if the ear will not "pop", often on one side |
|---|---|
| Pain | Sharp during descent, then a dull ache that can last for hours or days |
| Muffled hearing | Sounds seem distant, as if underwater |
| Ringing or dizziness | Tinnitus, or a brief sense of imbalance |
Mild cases often settle on their own within a day or two. Swallowing, yawning, or gently blowing against a pinched nose with a closed mouth can help the ear equalise.
Please see a doctor if any of these apply

Bringing your flight details helps. The airline, the date, and when the pain began let the doctor build a clearer picture. If you are taking any medication, a photograph of the packet is enough.
Too unwell to travel to us? We also offer house calls to your hotel room and online consultations.
